UCSI University’s Foundation in Music is specifically tailored and designed to prepare post-SPM students for UCSI University’s degrees in Classical and Contemporary Music. The three semesters foundation programme includes music core courses as well as general electives for students to choose from. Successful completion of the foundation programme will satisfy all entry requirements and allow for direct entry to the music degree programme outlined here.

Assessments

Vary from course to course including:
  • Written exams.
  • Practical performance.
  • Recital / master class attendance.
  • Project-based coursework.
Candidates may be admitted into the music degree programs by meeting BOTH academic and music requirements below:

(1) Academic Requirements - fulfill ONE of the following requirements:

SPM/ O-Levels Min 5 credits
UEC Min 3 credits
SAM/CPU SAM – Min average of 50% in 5 subjects
CPU – Min average of 50% in 6 subjects
WAEC/NECO Minimum 5 credits (If aggregate of best 5 subjects > 15 points)
International Baccalaureate 21/42 from 6 subjects
Other Year 12 Equivalent Minimum overall average of 50%
Other Year 11 Equivalent Minimum overall average of 60%
Other qualifications deemed equivalent to SPM/O-Level by Malaysian Qualifications Agency Min Average 60%
English Requirements
  • A distinction (A+, A or A-) in the English Language subject at SPM/UEC level; or MUET Band 5; or a score of 196 (computer-based) / 525 (writing-based) / 69 (internet-based) in TOEFL; or Band 5.5 in IELTS.
  • In the event that the English Language Requirements are not met, student may be required to undertake additional English module(s) prior to or concurrently with the undergraduate programme, based on the University’s decision.
* International students holding equivalent academic qualifications but which are not conducted in English, are required to sit for the English Placement Test, which may result in the taking of the Certificate in English programme (1 to 10 months). Students who intend to pursue the above undergraduate programme directly, are advised to fulfil the above English requirements prior to commencing their studies at the University.
Note / Legend Discretion is given to the Head of School to deal with applicants who have results borderline to the Academic Requirements.

(2) Music Requirements: Candidate must pass the Institute of Music audition and placement tests, as follows:

Notes:
  1. String/woodwind/voice majors are required to bring along their own piano accompanist or request for one from the Institute. In the latter case, a fee will be charged. Contemporary music candidates may choose to use minus-one recordings to accompany their audition. Please bring your own laptop, tablet or other similar audio-playback devices. The Institute will prepare a 1/8–1/8 inch audio connection.
  2. Composition majors have to submit a portfolio of compositions and pass the audition on a major instrument.
Aural/ Practical skills test Repeating a melody and a rhythmic phrase from memory
Theory Test Intervals, scales and key signatures, triads, grouping of notes and rests
Auditions are to be conducted about one month before the start of the semester
**Note for International Candidates: Candidate is given the provision to do a live audition for admissions. For more information, please check with your course counsellor/agent.
