Undergraduate Students
Three final year Food Science and Nutrition students of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, UCSI University, were employed by national and multi-national companies in Malaysia before they graduated.
Eng Suit Ying is an R & D Executive of Stancodex Sdn. Bhd., a company with its head office in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The company’s factory in Johor produces coconut cream powder, low-fat desiccated coconut and non-diary creamer. Here is what Ms Eng has to say about her job as an R & D Executive, “My first project is to develop a coconut milk powder that will dissolve in cold water. The main aim is to export this coconut powder to the Middle East and China where people actually use coconut milk as an alternative to dairy. Hence, with this specially formulated coconut milk powder, there is no hassle in preparing a great tasting glass of coconut milk at home.” She added, “unlike university life, my current job as R&D executive is more towards applying the theories I’ve learnt within the classroom in research and literature throughout the formulation process.” “Although I have encountered some difficulty in formulating the optimum instant properties and sensory properties, I was able to overcome it through multiple trials and each trial has inspired and motivated me to produce a better formulation. This is definitely a good learning experience and I am looking forward to other new projects to be assigned to me soon.”
Lye Phui Yan is a Nutrition Advisor of Abbott Laboratories (M) Sdn. Bhd., a global health care company based in Shah Alam, Selangor, which specialises in paediatric nutrition, medical nutrition, consumer pharmaceutical and consumer products. “I support the marketing department via telemarketing to identify and target their best customers, managing marketing campaigns, and generating quality leads for the sales team,” said Ms Lye. “As Nutrition Advisor, I provide professional nutrition advice to customers with the aim of improving their quality of life. Focusing on activities and programmes to gain customer’s loyalty as well as attracting new and retaining old customers is all part of the job,” she elaborated.
Soh Eu Ying is an Account Specialist of Abbott Laboratories (M) Sdn. Bhd. She is attached to the Established Pharmaceutical Department (EPD) which specialises in women’s health products. “I am accountable for sales targeting, conducting needs analysis and for the closing of sales on targeted strategic account customers, as well as ensuring the sales are profitable and within the market goals of EPD,” she said. “I am also responsible to raise the level of awareness within healthcare professionals and increase the demand of the women health product line,” she added. She then said, “I am required to maintain an active and visible role with healthcare professionals and retailers in order to facilitate pull-through programmes to increase their awareness. My main job is to grow Abbott women’s health business and brand loyalty within strategic accounts besides maximizing the growth of market share.”
Although these Food Science and Nutrition students were from three different intakes, they share some similarities in their profiles. Their final year projects were on natural product chemistry and they have publications in international refereed journals. The skills, knowledge and experience gained from the Co-Operative Education Training Programme (Co-Op) have been most useful in enabling them to be employed even before they graduate. These three students are testimonials of the educational excellence at UCSI University. The Faculty of Applied Sciences wishes them all the best in their promising careers.

Other Testimonials
Apex Pharmacy Marketing Sdn Bhd
I am currently a Trade Event Executive for Apex Pharmacy Marketing. In my role, I work for Nestlé Healthcare Nutrition and I plan and organise healthcare events/roadshows in the trade channel. I also support medical events explaining to healthcare professionals the healthcare products Nestlé has to offer that benefit their patients. Besides that, I am also involved in creating new trade marketing strategies to bring brand awareness to the public and conduct small talks now and then regarding nutrition to the public.

Studying at UCSI, my most memorable experience was participating in the Applied Science Week Food Fair. It was not just selling store-bought food - my friends and I had to come up with an idea for a new type of food/snack which is healthy and is not already found in the market. I made new friends, got closer to my course mates and learned what it means to have good teamwork. This had definitely contributed in improving my soft skills.

Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd
Currently I’m working at Dutch Lady Milk Industries Berhad, a well-known multinational company, which focuses on paediatric nutrition and consumer products. As a Nutritional Executive under the Marketing Department, I represent the company by delivering product presentations and building relationships with healthcare professionals or key decision makers. Apart from that, I also initiate and organise sales/marketing activities in line with the field approach with the aim of achieving sales objectives. Expanding and maintaining good relationships with the respective healthcare professionals to promote my company’s range of products is also part of my responsibility.

The most memorable part of my undergraduate studies at UCSI was the Co-Operative Education Training Programme (Co-Op) as we learned different skills and knowledge that we would not have learned after three years of theoretical studies alone. Furthermore, the experience gained during the six months of Co-Op programme is valuable and priceless; it helped prepare us before we entered the real corporate life.

Sime Darby Technology Centre
During my Co-Op attachment to the Molecular Biology Laboratory of SDTC (Sime Darby Technology Centre), I was given a chance to carry out a mini-project assigned to me by my supervisor. I found that my laboratory skills have improved and I could look into the field of molecular biology in depth. From all my three Co-Op placements from first year to final year, I've gained knowledge and experience in the area of allergy and immunology, plant tissue culture, genetics and molecular biology. I can testify that the Co-Op programme is important and valuable during my study as well as in my life. After graduating from UCSI University, I am currently a full-time employee. part of the reason why I was successfully selected for full-time employment was largely due to my Co-Op experience.

This Co-Op experience has been truly amazing as I got to experience the real working life. At my Co-Op job at Yeo Hiap Seng's, I was posted to the Quality Assurance Department which consisted of microbiology labs, chemical labs, canned food labs and beverage labs. I really enjoyed my Co-Op stint because it provided me with insight into tasks within a manufacturing company. I had the opportunity to see how products are processed - from raw material to finished product.
