The Certificate in English programme is a programme offered by UCSI University in collaboration with UCSI English Academy (UEA).

UEA offers a wide variety of English language programmes, which include the following:
  • English Enrichment Programme
  • English for Academic Purposes
  • English for Specific Purposes
  • English Holiday Camp
  • Business English
  • Examination Courses - IELTS and TOEFL
  • Corporate Training
Currently, UEA has over 800 students from 60 countries studying in UCSI University, its main school in Kuala Lumpur. Taught by qualified teachers coming from the United Kingdom, Australia, United States of America, New Zealand and Malaysia, students are assured of quality education.

The Certificate in English programme is an intensive multi-level programme, which immerses students in interactive, communicative and systematic courses which expose students to all aspects of language learning. Particular attention is paid to grammar, vocabulary development, pronunciation, and the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The courses are designed to provide students with maximum exposure to English through authentic, interesting and current subject matters.

Programme Details

Students will attend two 2-hour classes each, daily. In addition to these four hours of intensive study, students are encouraged to use our English lounge for activities and to study on their own, each day.

In a typical lesson, students are introduced to key language points in real world context. These language points are then developed through carefully-structured practice sessions in which the students may be involved in group, pair or individual work. Students have a thirty-minute break between classes, after which they will then change classrooms and teachers for the second lesson.

Value-added features to the programme is the English lounge activities where students are constantly given activities and sessions such as Business English classes, creative writing, presentation skills, formal letter writing, learning English through songs, English quizzes, and language games like Smart Mouth, Scrabble, Taboo and Pictionary to reinforce their language proficiency. As part of the lounge activities, students are also taken on trips to Genting Highlands and Melaka to encourage them to practice their English outside of the classroom.

At UEA, we emphasize the promotion of intercultural experiences since we have students from 60 countries. From time to time, gatherings and food carnivals are also organized to further foster an appreciation of, and respect for other cultures.

Assessments

Throughout the Programme, students are assessed monthly by means of tests, assignments, mid-month examinations and final examinations. The areas of assessment include Listening, Speaking, Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary.

Courses Progression

Students who complete the Certificate in English will move on to the next level, English for Academic Purposes, together with their major.
To be eligible for the programme, students must obtain credits and a pass in Bahasa Malaysia at the SPM level (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) or its equivalent.
The ‘English Enrichment Programme’ is based around the ‘Cutting Edge’ series of language learning materials. It provides students with an intensive, yet enjoyable learning experience. To supplement the key courses material, UEA teachers use an extensive library of current teaching materials which further enhances the student learning experience.

Before students join any of the classes, they are assessed through a placement test after which they are assigned into the appropriate level of study. The courses progress through ten levels of academic study from ‘Beginner 1’ to ‘Upper-Intermediate 2’. Within each level, students are formally tested twice a month to monitor their progress and eligibility for progression to the next level of study.

In order to obtain the certificate, students must complete Level 5 to 10 of the Enrichment Programme as well as the general courses (MPU) courses. The table below categorizes proficiency Levels from 5 to 10:
