UCSI University’s Foundation in Music is specifically tailored and designed to prepare post-SPM students for UCSI University’s degrees in Classical and Contemporary Music. The three semesters foundation programme includes music core courses as well as general electives for students to choose from. Successful completion of the foundation programme will satisfy all entry requirements and allow for direct entry to the music degree programme outlined here.

Assessments

Vary from course to course including:
  • Written exams.
  • Practical performance.
  • Recital / master class attendance.
  • Project-based coursework.
Candidates may be admitted into the music degree programs by meeting BOTH academic and music requirements below:

(1) Academic Requirements - fulfill ONE of the following requirements:

(Commerce / Science stream)
Min 4 credits
11 years education Min Average 60%
English Requirements
  • A distinction (A+, A or A-) in the English Language subject at SPM/UEC level; or MUET Band 5; or a score of 196 (computer-based) / 525 (writing-based) / 69-70 (internet-based) in TOEFL; or Band 5.5 in IELTS.
  • In the event that the English Language Requirements are not met, student may be required to undertake additional English module(s) prior to or concurrently with the undergraduate programme, based on the University’s decision.
* International students holding equivalent academic qualifications but which are not conducted in English, are required to sit for the English Placement Test, which may result in the taking of the Certificate in English programme (1 to 10 months). Students who intend to pursue the above undergraduate programme directly, are advised to fulfil the above English requirements prior to commencing their studies at the University.
Note / Legend Discretion is given to the Head of School to deal with applicants who have results borderline to the Academic Requirements.

SPM Credit – 'A+' to 'C'
O-Level – 'A' to 'C'
UEC Credit – 'A1' to 'B6'
STPM principal – 'A' to 'C'
'A' Levels principal – 'A' to 'E'

(2) Music Requirements: Candidate must pass the School of Music audition and placement tests, as follows:

Play three Classical pieces of contrasting styles Play three pieces of contrasting styles, including one Contemporary piece
  • Drum majors: demonstration of knowledge of common drum beats including 8-beat rock, 16-beat rock, and Hip-Hop at various tempi
Practical Test
  • Sight-reading
  • Open score reading
  • Playing from simple figured bass
  • Repeating a melody, a rhythm and a chord progression from memory
  • Singing intervals
Theory Test
  • Intervals
  • Key signatures, scales
  • Triads
  • Time signatures, beaming into beats, rests
  • Scale degrees
  • Italian, German and French terms
Benchmarking Entry Levels:

Students are expected to have achieved the following levels in practical (major instrument) and theory from of the following examination boards (or equivalent):
  1. Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM)
  2. Trinity-Guildhall

Practical Grade 7 Grade 3

Additional notes:
  • While desirable, the certificates are not a necessary requirement. Candidates may be admitted into this program if they could demonstrate their music skills and achievements by passing the School of Music audition and placements tests, as listed above.
*Auditions are held in March, July and November.
