The MSc in Health Sciences is a post-professional degree designed to prepare professionals for emerging leadership roles in the rapidly changing healthcare landscape and to enhance employability for advancement in clinical, educational and administrative areas. Emphasis is placed on independent, self-directed and faculty-guided learning. This programme is intended for practising healthcare professionals or those with an undergraduate degree in a health-related discipline (e.g. Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences) with plans of pursuing a career in the health services. 

This programme focuses on research (dissertation and viva) as a major requirement for attaining the degree. Through research work, learners will gain an in-depth understanding of their research topic and generate new insights. Learners will be able to hone their time management and problem-solving skills throughout their research period. They will contribute to the understanding of current healthcare issues and technological advancement in sciences through research findings at seminars and conferences. Throughout the candidature, a qualified and experienced supervisory panel will help guide the learners in developing a strong sense of ethics and professionalism for the profession.

Entry Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with minimum CGPA of 3.0 or equivalent, in a relevant discipline from a recognised university OR
Bachelor’s degree with minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent, in a relevant discipline from a recognised university with at least 1 year’ relevant working experience OR
Bachelor’s degree with minimum CGPA of 2.50 or equivalent, in a relevant discipline from a recognised university with at least 5 years’ relevant working experience.

English Language Requirements

As English is the medium of instruction, the candidate must meet one of the following to gain direct entry into the programme:
  • TOFEL: a minimum score of 550
  • IELTS: a minimum score of 6.0
  • Undergraduate degree with English as its medium of instruction:
    • For Malaysian, direct entry
    • For Non-Malaysian, students might be referred to a verbal interview or written test before acceptance

As an MSc in Health Sciences graduate, you will be equipped to pursue careers in areas as diverse as health services management, aged-care management, health planning, international health, health promotion, occupational health and safety, occupational and environmental hygiene and research studies. Graduates can choose from various career options e.g. academician, trained scientist in research institutes, policymaker in various governmental agencies, or entrepreneur / technopreneur who understands the relationship between scientific research and commercial factors and is sensitive to the society’s needs. In addition, this programme also provides a strong foundation to further one’s scholarly pursuits.

Semester 2 -6 (Long semester)

Dissertation and viva are the major requirements for learners to attain this degree. However, learners are also required to pass two compulsory subjects (i.e. Research Methodology for Scientists and Academic Communication) in order to graduate. 

In addition, learners will have to prepare for and present their research proposal - for the Master Research Project Planning and Proposal Presentation paper - and are required to obtain a minimum grade B, in order for them to start their research project. 

Research work is graded as Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U); learners are required to obtain an “S” grade – based on their research progress– and a recommendation from their supervisor each semester in order for them to continue their candidature until the submission of their dissertation (a minimum of three semesters). 

Learners are encouraged to present their research findings in research seminars and conferences and are also encouraged to publish them in scientific journals.
