‘Maths Challenge’ a hit among Cambodian students

PHNOM PENH: UCSI University (UCSI), Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) and REXPO Group of Companies (REXPO) joined efforts to organise the ‘Mathematics Challenge’ in Sunway Hotel Phnom Penh in December 2013.

A government-backed private firm, EMGS aims to promote Malaysia as a global education hub that provides quality study programmes while REXPO is a company that provides institutions with comprehensive international marketing solutions.

Notably, the challenge aimed to instill a passion for mathematics and enhance problem-solving skills among students from various high schools in Cambodia. These include Sovannaphumi School and Phnom Penh Thmey High School, to name a few.

Segregated into ‘individual and group’ categories, the quiz saw active participation from over 200 students and received positive feedback from REXPO General Manager Steve Santhosh.

“We’re very pleased that the event ran smoothly,” he said. “The organisers were very accommodating and I could see that all who attended (the event) had a great time.”

Sharing the same sentiment, UCSI Centre for Pre-U Studies Director Assistant Professor Mabel Tan highlighted that the quiz was fun and interactive.

“There was a lot of audience participation and I was happy that the students stayed back till the end of the event,” says Tan.

“It was very well done and I look forward to being a part of similar events in the future.”

Apart from the quiz, an insightful presentation on UCSI University and scholarships – amounting to USD51,000 in total – were awarded to quiz winners.

Other prominent industry leaders who were in attendance include REXPO Senior Partner Ahmad Rezal Chan; and EMGS (Malaysia Education Promotion Centre Vietnam) representatives Director Helmy Sulaiman and Specialist (Education Department) Nguyen Vinh Trung, among others.
