UCSI’s Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) dean, Professor Ts Dr Ooi Keng Boon and Associate Professor Dr Garry Tan Wei Han’s article titled "Wearable Payment: A Deep Learning-based Dual-stage SEM-ANN Analysis" (2020), has been recognised as one of the Most Downloaded Articles in Expert Systems with Applications (Elsevier).  It was co-authored with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman academics Dr Lee Voon Hsien, Dr Leong Lai Ying and Mr Hew Jun Jie.

Expert Systems with Applications (Elsevier) is a 'Level 3' journal in the Association of Business Schools Academic Journal Quality Guide (ABS) and has an Impact Factor of 5.452 according to the Journal Citation Reports 2018 (JCR) by Clarivate Analytics.

Their study highlights the antecedents that affect a user in using wearable payment by examining the role of technology readiness, perceived aesthetics, mobile usefulness, and mobile ease of use using a dual-stage SEM-ANN analysis with deep learning.

Their study also proposes an integrated framework which consists of Fashion Theory, Technology Readiness Theory and the Mobile Technology Acceptance Model which help to provide clearer guidance and insights on the acceptance of wearable payment among consumers in Malaysia. The framework has many managerial implications for merchants, retailers, payment organisations in developing their business strategies.

Wearable payment has been forecasted to alter the landscape of payment in Malaysia in the near future and as Malaysia is preparing to be a cashless society, the results will guide marketers and payment organisations to design a more successful wearable payment solution so that they can convince potential adopters to adopt to this new technology

“Our motivation behind writing this article is that wearable payment is different from mobile payment as many adopters regarded technology as a fashionable product. Given that the Malaysian government is heavily pushing towards a cashless society, the readiness to adopt wearable payment, however, is still low among potential adopters which spark our interest to conduct this study”, commented Professor Ooi.

Both academics stressed that it is important to submit one’s manuscript to well-known and reputable international journals as it would bring more visibility to one’s publications.  This may not be easy as the reviewers can be very critical with one’s work, but at the end of the day, the feedback will help to improve the quality of one’s existing manuscript to a publishable standard.
