A TIME FOR GIVING & SHARING

Kuala Lumpur, 09 December 2011 - More than 100 first year scholars of UCSI University Trust gathered at the BOS Hall of UCSI University recently to celebrate the year-end festivity before they headed home for semester break. The aim of the annual scholars get-together was to foster closer relationship among scholars as well as to provide an opportunity for scholarship awardees to meet with the leadership of the university in an informal setting

The theme for this year’s gathering was Bling Bling and scholars were all bling-ed up as they dressed to impress. When Ms Margaret Soo, Chief Operating Officer of UCSI University Trust took the stage to convey a special message to the scholars, she said “Scholars are like diamonds in a rock that need to be polished in order for them to bling.” In other words, scholars need to be nurtured in order for them to be the best they can be.

After some festive sing-along, the first highlight of the evening was the gift exchange when the guests of honor joined the circle of scholars for the festive gift exchange. The scholars received a second gift when YBhg Dato’ Peter Ng, Founder of UCSI University presented each of the scholars a motivational book to inspire them to excel in life.

“I hope someday I can be an inspiration to others just like how Dato’ Peter Ng has inspired us,” said Michelle Liong. She is a first year scholar whose dream is to become a journalist and UCSI University Trust has given her the opportunity to pursue that dream.

Another highlight of the evening was the western style dinner at The Quad fine dining restaurant prepared by the students of the Faculty of Hospitality Management at UCSI University Kuala Lumpur Campus.

The evening came to a close with its third highlight as the scholars spent a few moments with Professor Emeritus Lim Koon Ong who shared how he became one of the top two scholars chosen in Malacca for the Colombo Plan Scholarship to further his studies to Canada and the challenges, fun, habits and attitude inculcated in him.

Together with U-Schos, the association for UCSI University Scholars who took leadership to organize the year-end gathering, UCSI University Trust hopes to make this year-end gathering for first year scholars a tradition where new scholars can experience the warm welcome from their senior scholars and the Trust office.
