UCSI holds indoor race for charity

KUCHING: UCSI University (UCSI) recently organised its first indoor race aptly named, ‘The Fast & The Curious’ to help raise funds and awareness for the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS).

The event was planned and managed by the students of UCSI’s BA (Hons) Event and Tourism Management programme as part of their assignment.

‘The Fast & The Curious’ was held at CityOne Megamall Kuching and had successfully attracted over 40 participants from schools and colleges. This includes SMK Pending, SMK St Teresa, SEGi College Sarawak and Politeknik Kuching, Sarawak (PKS), among others.

“The future generations are our responsibility. Through this event, we hope to help SCCS get the funds to provide free and comprehensive information as well as support to those who are suffering from cancer,” said Ting Hui Bun, lecturer and chief advisor of the event.

Due to the positive response, Ting said that the organising committee is hopeful of emulating the success of the event by making the race an annual event.

“Through this event, the participants were able to show support and pay tributes to those suffering from cancer. This collective goodwill can make a real difference to the patients. Our effort is meaningful and we’d certainly want to do it again,” he said.

Ting also praised the students on their work.

“Organising an event requires excellent leadership and teamwork. The students have covered all the practical and logistical processes involved in organising this. It is certainly a good practice for them before pursuing their career in the industry,” he said.

The event was also purposed to instil positive values and to hone the participants’ soft skills. Each team was required to go through five game stations, which tested them on different skills. This included problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, conflict solution and communication, among others.

"We had so much fun. Through this race, we also learned some very important skills that will prepare us for a challenging future,” said one of the participants James Lau.

“My friends and I are also part of this for a good cause. No one suffering from cancer should walk alone. It's a really great charity to be part of because the work they do at SCCS is very important,” said the young lad who is currently reading the BA (Hons) Commerce programme in UCSI.

‘The Fast & The Furious’ was co-sponsored by multiple companies and organisations. This includes East Asia Palm Products, Momentum Studio, Lost City, Sentosa Sports Word, Cool La La, Farmer’s Crib, Akira, Hangout Bistro, GSC Cinema, Star Cineplex, LFS Cineplex, Sarawak Focus, HD Image, Khong Fah Trading, Meow Meow Café, GPS Production, Wisma KYS, Ginger Cat House, Apizzariff Photography and CityOne Megamall as the venue sponsor.

“This event would not have been a success without our sponsors. We truly appreciate their support. Like us, they are also committed to making a difference in our community. We certainly encourage our students and the public to do the same as well,” said Ting.
