24 JulUCSI University and BCSD join hands to reshape corporate sustainability
KUALA LUMPUR – UCSI University and the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) Malaysia Berhad have teamed up to assist companies with their environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments.
Both parties will now jointly develop and roll out short courses, customised training programmes and capacity building initiatives that promote corporate sustainability.
“Most organisations want to improve their ESG metrics but many don’t know how to go about it,” said UCSI deputy vice-chancellor (Research and postgraduate) Distinguished Professor Dr Phang Siew Moi.
“UCSI’s partnership with BCSD addresses market needs. Our partnership will result in genuine innovations that will help companies fulfil their ESG commitments in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
Prof Phang was commenting after witnessing a memorandum of agreement signing between the two parties at UCSI’s Kuala Lumpur campus.
BCSD founding director Roberto Benetello said that the partnership addresses the talent gap companies face when it comes to sustainability efforts.
“With ESG on the uptrend globally, green jobs are at peak demand,” he said. “However, there is shortage in ESG talent as many universities don’t emphasise this.
“By partnering with UCSI, we will promote ESG insights not only to students, but to business professionals, industry players and members of the public.”
UCSI is ranked as one of Asia’s best private universities in the QS World University Rankings 2024.
The University scored the highest marks in the sustainability criterion among all private universities in Malaysia in the competitive annual rankings.
UCSI is the only Malaysian university that runs two Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE) to promote sustainable development at the local level by the United Nations University – the academic and research arm of the UN.
Based in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, the two RCEs promote Quality Education (SDG 4), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Climate Action (SDG 13), Life on Land (SDG 15), as well as Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16).
