Dr. Muhammad Rafiq is an Associate Professor of Human Resource Management at the UCSI Graduate Business School, UCSI University, Malaysia, a globally recognized institution ranked 282nd in the QS World University Rankings and among the top 1% of universities worldwide. He is a globally cited scholar, academic leader, and researcher whose work focuses on Human Resource Management, Organizational Behaviour, Green Human Resource Management, Sustainable Leadership, Employee Wellbeing, Hospitality Management, and Organizational Sustainability. He currently serves as the Head and Coordinator of APEL.Q for the Graduate Business School and as an Internal Assessor for UCSI University, contributing to academic quality assurance, accreditation, experiential learning assessment, and postgraduate education development. He also serves as the Graduate Business School Library Representative, supporting research excellence and academic resource development within the university. Prior to joining UCSI University, he served as Coordinator of UE Business School at the University of Education, Pakistan. He earned his PhD in Business Administration (Human Resource Management) from the School of Management, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), China, a prestigious research-intensive university ranked among the Top 190 universities globally in the QS World University Rankings. The School of Management at HIT holds the prestigious AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation, AMBA (Association of MBAs) accreditation, and CAMEA (China Advanced Management Education Accreditation) accreditation, reflecting its commitment to international standards of excellence in business and management education. This strong international academic foundation has supported Dr. Rafiq contributions to research, postgraduate supervision, academic leadership, and global scholarly collaboration.
Dr. Rafiq's research focuses on Human Resource Management, Organizational Behaviour, Green Human Resource Management, Sustainable Leadership, Employee Wellbeing, Job Embeddedness, Work Engagement, Pro-environmental Behaviour, Employee Retention, Organizational Sustainability, and Hospitality Management. His research examines how leadership practices, organizational climates, and human resource systems influence employee attitudes, wellbeing, sustainability outcomes, and organizational effectiveness. Over the years, he has developed a strong international research profile, with his scholarly contributions receiving substantial academic recognition. His research impact is reflected in a Google Scholar H-index of 25 and a Scopus H-index of 20. His recent research agenda aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to sustainable organizations, responsible management, environmental stewardship, employee wellbeing, and organizational resilience.
His research has been published extensively in internationally recognized journals indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus, including International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Tourism Management Perspectives, Management Decision, Employee Relations, Scientific Reports, Leadership & Organization Development Journal, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Insights, Environment, Development and Sustainability, Education + Training, WORK, Heliyon, Career Development International, Journal of Global Responsibility, and numerous other reputable journals. Through these publications, Dr. Rafiq has contributed significantly to advancing contemporary knowledge in sustainability, leadership, organizational behaviour, hospitality management, green human resource management, employee development, and workplace wellbeing. His work is widely cited and has established him as an emerging international scholar in the fields of management and sustainability research.
In recognition of his scholarly expertise and international standing, Dr. Rafiq serves in several editorial leadership roles within the global academic community. He is currently Associate Editor of Vision: The Journal of Business Perspective (SAGE Publishing) and PLOS ONE, Article Editor of SAGE Open, and Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio). He has also served as Editor of international scholarly book projects and held editorial appointments with academic publishers and journals. Furthermore, he has reviewed more than 365 manuscripts for leading SSCI-indexed journals, including International Journal of Human Resource Management, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, The Service Industries Journal, Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences, and numerous other internationally recognized journals. These appointments reflect his commitment to advancing research quality, scholarly rigor, and academic excellence across the management and social sciences disciplines.
Dr. Rafiq actively collaborates with researchers from Malaysia, China, Pakistan, Europe, the Middle East, and other regions of the world. His international collaborations have resulted in numerous publications in high-impact journals and have strengthened global knowledge exchange in sustainability, leadership, and organizational research. His research increasingly focuses on developing evidence-based solutions that help organizations promote environmental responsibility, employee wellbeing, innovation, and long-term sustainability.
Beyond research, Dr. Rafiq is actively involved in postgraduate supervision, research mentoring, and academic leadership. He supervises doctoral and postgraduate students from diverse international backgrounds and supports emerging scholars in developing high-quality research capable of publication in internationally recognized journals. Through mentorship and supervision, he contributes to nurturing the next generation of researchers and academic leaders.
Dr. Rafiq has presented his research at numerous international conferences and scholarly forums across Asia, Europe, and North America. His work has been presented at prestigious international conferences, including the Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting in the United States, the International Business Information Management Association (IBIMA) Conference in Italy, the International Conference on Management Science and Engineering (ICMSE) in Switzerland, the Asia-Pacific Management and Engineering Conference (APME) in China, and the ESE International Conference on Management Science, Education Science and Human Development in the Philippines. These international engagements have enabled him to contribute to global academic discourse, establish international research collaborations, and disseminate impactful research findings to scholars, practitioners, and policymakers worldwide.
As an educator, Dr. Rafiq is committed to creating a dynamic, technology-enhanced, and student-centered learning environment. His teaching philosophy integrates academic rigor with practical relevance, enabling students to bridge theoretical knowledge with contemporary organizational and societal challenges. Through his contributions to research, teaching, editorial leadership, postgraduate supervision, and institutional service, Dr. Rafiq continues to strengthen the international visibility, research excellence, and global reputation of UCSI University while contributing meaningfully to the advancement of management and sustainability scholarship worldwide.

Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Rafiq has established a strong record of postgraduate research supervision and academic mentoring. To date, he has successfully supervised 12 PhD/DBA candidates to graduation, while more than 30 MBA level students have successfully completed their studies under his supervision. He currently supervises a large portfolio of doctoral researchers at various stages of their research journey, ranging from proposal development to viva voce examination.
His supervisees conduct research in diverse areas including Human Resource Management, Organizational Behaviour, Green Human Resource Management, Sustainable Leadership, Employee Wellbeing, Hospitality Management, Organizational Sustainability, and Strategic Management. Several of his supervised projects have resulted in publications in leading SSCI- and Scopus-indexed journals, including International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Tourism Management Perspectives, Management Decision, Scientific Reports, Employee Relations, and other internationally recognized outlets.
Dr. Rafiq is committed to developing future scholars through rigorous supervision, research mentoring, publication guidance, and international academic collaboration. His supervision philosophy emphasizes methodological rigor, theoretical contribution, ethical research practices, and practical relevance, enabling students to produce impactful research that contributes to both academia and industry.
