Biography

Terrence Ling Hung Shu is a versatile and accomplished musician and educator. He obtained a Bachelor of Contemporary Music from UCSI University and later earned a Master of Educational Leadership and Management from UNITAR International University. 

 

Currently, Terrence serves as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Music, UCSI University, where he is dedicated to helping his students reach their full potential. He is an endorsing artist for Canopus Drums and a member of SEADOM 30u30, a group of young musicians making their mark in the music world. He is the organising chairperson of the UCSI National Music Competition, World Voice & Choral Competition, and Sarawak Contemporary Voice Open Masterclass.  

 

As an award-winning choral conductor, Terrence has led choirs to win Gold awards at competitions in Malaysia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Thailand, Finland, Indonesia and Italy. Notable achievements include winning the Grand Prix Finals at the 10th International Choir Festival, Grand Prix Thailand. His outstanding accomplishments also include receiving the Special Conductors Prize in Croatia and the award for Artistic Achievement in Musical Direction in Malaysia. 

 

In addition to his conducting roles, Terrence has established himself as a chorister, performing with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of renowned international conductors such as Benjamin Zander, Andreas Delf, Arnie Roth, and others. He has been involved in multiple productions at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas. Terrence has also been appointed as the Assistant Choral Conductor of Dithyrambic Singers for various concerts, including Carmina Burana, Final Fantasy, and Queen of Spades, with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Furthermore, he is an alumnus of the Indonesian Youth Choir, a premier choir dedicated to achieving excellence in choral singing. Terrence has showcased his talent as Draco in the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary World Tour Concert at Plenary Hall Malaysia. 

 

Terrence is also sought after as a singing coach and adjudicator. In addition to conducting multiple workshops both locally and internationally, he has been invited to adjudicate prestigious events such as Sing! China, China Water Cube Cup Regional Finals in Malaysia, IX Jean Sibelius International Choir Festival, and Dimash Qudaibergen Live in Malaysia. He has also collaborated with Astro, a well-known local TV show, for various competitions and productions. 

 

As a session drummer, Terrence began performing professionally in his second year of college. He had the opportunity to collaborate with Toro Cheng Trio, one of the jazz pianists in Malaysia, and recorded their debut jazz album, "Pianistic Wolverine." Later, he joined NewSound, a multi-ethnic band comprising musicians from Scotland, Japan, and Malaysia, and they released their debut album, "Bearing Witness." Currently, Terrence is the drummer of the Malaysian Chinese jazz band, JSY, which consistently performs sold-out shows in the region. Terrence also has had the privilege of performing with various artists and musicians from countries such as the USA, UK, Italy, Netherlands, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and New Zealand. He has also showcased his talent at renowned jazz festivals including the Singapore International Jazz Festival, Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival, World Youth Jazz Festival, Borneo Jazz Festival, and the recent Disney in Concert at the Plenary Hall and Genting Highlands.  

 

Despite his many achievements and accolades, Terrence remains grounded and focused on his passion for music and education. He is committed to helping his students reach their full potential and spreading the joy of music to others. Terrence continues to strive for excellence in all that he does
