The inaugural “Battle of the Chefs” was held on July 1988 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Penang (previously Traders Hotel and now Hotel Jen). It started with the only 60 chefs mostly from hotels in Penang. 

The event grew to having a recognised World Association of Chefs Continental status and in 2014 had overwhelming entries exceeding 1,500; it was a logical choice to relocate the 15th edition of the Battle of the Chefs back to Penang International Sports Arena which is now re-named as SPICE Arena, the “Subterranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre”.

In Battle of the Chefs 2018, two students from UCSI University won bronze medals while three won the Diploma Awards. They were recognised for their efforts in creating dishes that were authentic as well as tasty. In the competition, they were able to show off their talent and potential while honing their culinary skills.

UCSI’s Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management continues to participate in events such as these which give its students the opportunity to apply practically what they learn in classes. Other than hands-on experience, these events also provide students the chance to discover new methods of cooking and cater to varying tastes.
