Congratulations to students of the Faculty of Applied Science for their achievements at the 24th Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar!


KUALA LUMPUR: Students under UCSI University’s Faculty of Applied Sciences (FOAS) – comprising Biotechnology and Food Science students – recently attended the 24th Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar at Taylor’s University on May 11, 2013. 

Themed “Driving Solutions for the Future’, the seminar saw active participation from Monash, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and Taylor’s University, to name a few. 

UCSI University was well represented, as FOAS entered the maximum number of competitors, consisting of two oral and ten poster presenters. 

Notably, FOAS students demonstrated a sound understanding of knowledge in the field, netting two prestigious awards despite an all-round strong showing by other participants. Student Licia Khoo was ranked in the Top Three spots for her impressive oral presentation on the purification and characterisation of the laccase enzyme from the Termitomycetes haemii mushroom, while Ding Kar Yong won one of the Top Ten poster prizes for his project on enzyme (polyphenol oxidase) properties extracted from the lotus root 

Among those present at the event include approximately 38 Biotechnology students and several FOAS academics – namely, lecturer Dr Crystale Lim, Deputy Dean & Head (Postgraduate Studies) Assoc Prof Dr Hwang Jung Shan, Head (Research and Innovation) Assoc Prof Dr Renee Lim, Head (Biotechnology) Mr Andrew Morgan Tennant, as well as lecturers Ms Tan Yong Hui, Dr Wong Chen Wai, Dr Eric Chan and Dr Ho Hooi Ling. We are proud that all our presenters did well and KUDOS to Dr Crystale (FAS-RSA) and all academics involved for their dedication and hard work. CONGRATULATIONS AND WELL DONE!
