Elections at UCSI University

Kuala Lumpur, 12 June 2009 - Democracy was hard at work at UCSI University with two presidential elections being held simultaneously on campus. While students voted for their new Student Council President and Deputy President, staff and students as well as nearby Iran nationals came together in the UCSI University boardroom to vote in their country’s presidential elections. At UCSI University level, Stephanie Liew Sze Wei and Pang Huai Yi stepped down as the Student Council President and Deputy President after a year’s service. It was time again for fresh new faces to take over the reins. After some deliberations, the choices were narrowed down to two teams. Team A fielded Angala Henry Tonye, a 3rd year Nigerian Engineering student, to run for President, with Jessie Lim Yu Min, a final year Mass Communications student to run as Deputy President.  Team B fielded Faculty of IT and Management students, Simon Goh Wai Kit and Kendrick Ng to run for the President and Deputy President posts respectively.

Team A, Henry and Jessie won the elections garnering 56% percent of the votes. Both are looking forward to settling down in the Student Council office and to plan on electing a new Student Council soon to further unite local and international students. Henry and Jessie received their letter of appointments from the Vice President of Student Affairs, Mr. Moses Ling. In his acceptance speech, Henry thanked the students for putting their faith in him.UCSI University was also designated as one of about half a dozen polling stations in Malaysia for the recent Iranian Presidential elections. About 300 Iranians came to vote at UCSI University Kuala Lumpur campus. They comprised staff members and students of UCSI University as well as some Iranian nationals who are living in the Cheras, Kuala Lumpur area.

Both electoral processes went smoothly without a hitch, proving that democracy is well and truly put into practice at UCSI University.
