FIRST UNITY CAMP FOR ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE STUDENT ASSOCIATION

Port Dickson, 3 June, 2011 - The Accounting and Finance Student Association (AFSA) recently organised a three-day UNITY Camp themed ‘United We Stand, Divided We Fall’ at Casa Rachardo Resort, Port Dickson for a total of 90 students. The Camp was sponsored by KPMG Malaysia, one of UCSI University’s industry partners; CPA Australia, one of the nation’s professional accountancy bodies; and the University’s Student Affairs Office (SAO).

"As an employer, KPMG places strong emphasis on both academic and non-academic or extracurricular activities. In today’s graduate market, it is no longer sufficient to be just a straight ‘A’ student. Now, there is an increasing demand for students with exceptional soft skills and extra-curricular involvements. I am glad to see so many of you are investing your time to participate in non-academic activities such as this camp," said Theresa Chong, Partner of KPMG Malaysia.

With regards to collaborating with the University, she said, "We trust that our partnership with UCSI University will not only help to realise our aspiration to be the Employer of Choice amongst graduates, but also to develop and help prepare graduates joining the workforce to subsequently contribute towards the nation’s growth."

At the Camp, the participants learnt about teamwork and unity. Many teambuilding activities were conducted throughout the day which the participants seemed to enjoy.

Law Joe Hahn, a student from Accounting and Finance commented, "The part that was the most fun for me was when we were required to walk blindfolded without saying a word to each other to the designated checkpoints by following the instructions of our leaders. Thus, I learnt that in a situation where one cannot see or speak, a person relies on his/her leaders to guide and keep him/her on the right track."

KPMG had previously collaborated with AFSA on two other activities: first was the Professional Pathway Day in collaboration with ACCA, and the second event organised was a student visit to the KPMG office in March with over 40 students from UCSI University.

AFSA extends a special note of appreciation to all sponsors and participants who supported the event.
