Futuristic design collection wins at the Runway Designer Search 2018

Tan Chun Yong was selected as the winner of UCSI University’s De Institute of Creative Arts and Design (ICAD) first ever Runway Designer Search competition.

Chun Yong’s futuristic design themed ‘’the secret beauty of the crawlies – d insects’’ was inspired by Lady Gaga and her music video, Bad Romance.

He mostly used PVC and PU fabric, netting and glittered-velvet fabric. He also attempted a laser cutting on one of his outfits.

‘’From the bottom of my heart, I am beyond words to describe my win today. It is like receiving recognition from the experts in the industry.

It all started as a kid, when I always assisted my grandmother in sewing and this sparked my interest in fashion designing. My beloved family is the reason I am here today’’, shared Chun Yong upon winning the grand prize.

He will receive a full UCSI University Trust scholarship for the Bachelor of Fashion Design with Marketing worth RM70 000 and a 2 days 1 night stay at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang worth RM 1000.

The competition judging took place in late March with 12 finalists finally chosen to showcase a 3 piece fashion collection.

Finals were held on 17th April 2018, at Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang, in conjunction of Penang Fashion Week 2018.

The Runway Designer Search competition was organised to discover new and fresh Malaysian talents and provide to them a platform that will challenge their creativity and research skills.

It also formed as a guide for them to understand and meet the international standard of runway fashion.

“De Institute of Creative Arts and Design is excited to collaborate with Penang Fashion Week 2018 on our first Runway Designer Search competition.

The opportunity was made available to us as we continuously try to form a strong bond with the Malaysian fashion industry to expose fashion graduates and our students to the real world of fashion’’, shared Lucas Lim, event coordinator from ICAD.

The first runner-up, Khalawatliman Abu Bakar received a UCSI University Trust scholarship worth RM 10,000 and a 2 days 1 night stay at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang worth RM 600.
