An Informative Visit to CEVA Logistics

UCSI University's Logistics Student Association (LSA) recently visited CEVA Logistics, one of the world’s largest supply chain management companies in Shah Alam. The purpose of the visit was to introduce the LSA to the operations of the Distribution Centre (DC).

The event focused on the cross-docking activities of CEVA Logistics with approximately 67,000 m2 of warehousing facilities. This is one of the largest sites in CEVA’s South East Asia (SEA) cluster which comprises Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

CEVA’s facility in Bukit Jelutong is located in a strategic industrial area with excellent logistics infrastructure, connected to a highly-developed road network and an expanding rapid transit system, located close to Port Klang.

Having two warehouse facilities in one site enables CEVA to optimise the deployment of resources and equipment, for the benefit of customers. The new, enlarged facilities enable CEVA to offer fully integrated logistics and supply chain solutions to new and existing customers in Malaysia.

A total of 44 students from the MSc in Logistics Management, BA (Hons) Logistics Management, BA (Hons) Supply Chain Management and Diploma in Logistics Management programmes, accompanied by Bahri Bin Mahmud, seized the opportunity to obtain ideas, insights and experience.

The visit was officially facilitated by Prabagaran Subramaniam, CT Team Operation Manager of CEVA Logistics, Malaysia.  The visit started with an introduction of CEVA Logistics and its customers. After the introduction, the team was then familiarised with the cross-docking activities for two major clients, Colgate Palmolive and L’Oréal.

The most important part of the visit included an observation of how the inbound and outbound activities were done as well as how documentation and ERP are used. Also, how the performance of the picker is measured was also explained by the warehouse supervisor. Another interesting element was the classification of stock as per velocity.

This was a very good orientation of warehouse and distribution management which is one of the core areas of Logistics Management studies. UCSI’s LSA plans to conduct these kinds of informational visits regularly.
