Integrated Energy Saving System impresses at Schneider Electric University Challenge 2011

Kuala Lumpur, 23 February, 2012  - UCSI University recently bagged the first runner-up prize at the Schneider Electric University Challenge 2011, winning them RM10,000 including a group trophy and certificates.

With the theme "Go Green in Malaysia," the students were tasked in finding ideas to achieve energy-efficiency at any Malaysia's commercial and industry markets.

The main initiatives of the competition were to educate the future generation in energy efficient solutions for significant and sustainable savings, to create green awareness and encourage energy saving, to unleash and encourage creativity and innovation within the students and to establish a symbiotic and healthy relationship between the universities by facilitating learning opportunities.

The UCSI University winning team, made up of three undergraduate students, Loo Hoe Fieh and Yong Chung Lern who are graduating from the BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering programme this July and Tan Ying Hua, a third year student undertaking the BEng (Hons) Mechatronic Engineering programme, represented the University with their electrical system named ‘Sedaya Green,' that works through different components to save almost 50% of energy consumption.

Guided by Engr. Rodney Tan, a Senior Lecturer at UCSI University's Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment, the team was chosen as one of the five finalists after being shortlisted last December. They were then given approximately RM20, 000 to develop their system which was presented at the Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa to a panel of qualified judges in the presence of Yang Berbahagia Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia.

"Taking part in such competitions is crucial for the students, as they are exposed to the real world of engineering and are given the opportunity to put the theoretical skills taught within the classroom to practice," said Engr. Rodney.

"Furthermore, the industry will also be able to gauge the capabilities of our students, making them more sought after in the market," he added.

Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management with operations in more than 100 countries around the world, has been seeking the University's interns since September 2011 with two students acquiring full-time jobs at its local office, upon graduation.

This is in line with UCSI University efforts in transforming the University into a ‘Praxis University,' where students are given industry related opportunities to apply their knowledge within their fields.
