KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Management Studies ¨C under UCSI University's (UCSI) Faculty of Business and Information Science (FoBIS) successfully organised a public lecture titled, "An Investigation of Governance & Corporate Ethics Issues Facing ASEAN Countries" on July 17, 2013. 

Conducted at UCSI's Auditorium Hall by an esteemed speaker, Mr Ross Thompson, the lecture was attended by approximately 200 students and staff from various departments and faculties. 

Mr Ross Thompson is the Programme Leader for the Master of Business Administration (International) and is a Senior Lecturer (Corporate Strategy and Finance) in the Northampton Business School, University of Northampton, United Kingdom. 

His industrial background includes positions such as Product Manager, Account Manager, Regional Sales Manager, National Accounts Manager and Marketing Manager at IBM and Anchor Foods Ltd. 

He has also held numerous company secretarial and business management roles with the National Health Service (NHS), Thames Valley University and Cancer Research UK, where he was General Manager of the Clinical Research Directorate. 

The public lecture kick-started with a brief introduction of Mr Thompson's work experiences, which later moved on to an insightful discussion on the worldwide problem of governance and differences between western and ASEAN experiences. 

Quoting President Dae-Jung, the former President of South Korea, Mr Ross Thompson highlighted that "introducing new laws and institutions alone is not enough. Reform can only succeed when these changes are accompanied in people's attitude". 

He also pointed out the importance of ethics in business schools, adding that focus should not be placed on technical governance aspects alone but also its values and underpinnings to promote good governance. 

During the session, various feedback and questions were raised - by both local and international undergraduate and postgraduate learners alike ¨C on the topic discussed. 

Notably, all participants took away much valuable insight from the talk.
