IT talk by Hilti expert receives glowing feedback from students

KUALA LUMPUR: The School of Information Technology – under the Faculty of Business & Information Science at UCSI University – recently organised an industrial talk titled, ’Idea Generation for IT Research Projects’.

Open to all UCSI students, the talk was conducted by Dr Christoph Baeck, General Manager of Hilti Asia IT Services Sdn. Bhd. Notably, the talk aimed to bridge the gap between industry and academia by having a reputable industry expert speak on idea generation for IT research projects to the students. This is in line with the School’s mission: To provide industry-relevant courses and to produce industry-ready graduate’ as well as to drive students to think out-of-the-box.

Highlighting the 4I’s – namely, ‘Idea, Invention, Improvement and Innovation for IT Projects’ – Dr Baeck pointed out that it was key to think up an idea first in order to get the best out of each individual in an organisation. The idea would then be converted into an invention. Through research, the invention can be further enhanced.

The students gave their thumbs-up on the talk as it was not only very informative but was also a mix of lectures and video clips featuring innovative works by several IT giants.

It was hoped that similar industrial talks would be conducted more often in future as this session provided better insight into the intricacies of the industry and what students can expect when starting their careers.

“By bringing IT industrial talks into the classroom, the University shows that it is committed to bring the students closer to the IT industry,” says the School’s Head Chloe Thong. “This talk is particularly useful to our final year IT students who are working on their final year projects.”

“Not only are they more guided now in terms of how to brainstorm for good ideas but they will also be able to create proposals with added commercial value because they are solving real-life problems using IT solutions.”
