Love is in the Air at UCSI University

Kuala Lumpur, 12 February 2009 - “Love isn’t just for couples” and “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus”. These were the two main themes for the Valentine’s Day season at UCSI University. Students from Peer Counselling organised a two-day event to enlighten students on love and relationships in love language tests, debates and speed dating.

Mr. Peter Ting, Managing Partner from the UCSI Blue Ocean Strategy Regional Centre and author of Straight Talk about Boy-Girl Relationships and Bouncing Back from Crisis, delivered his talk to a full room of students on the pitfalls of relationships and a unique look into  relationships between men and women, taking many examples from his own 22-year marriage. The next day saw another prominent speaker Mr. Kenneth Wong, Assistant Director of Prison, Drugs & AIDS at Malaysian Care deliver his seminar entitled Romance + Sex = Love?.

Before the seminar, students held a heated debate on the same topic. The opposition won the debate, with English Language and Communication student Sara Marwan Kwaider (Syria) winning the title of best speaker. The debate was a great platform for students to explore the subject of love and sex from different angles. The audience also participated in the discussion after the debate.

The students also got to experience what speed dating was all about. Ten couples made brief three-minute introductions about themselves before the boys got up and proceeded to move to the next lady in line. This went on until everyone had the chance to meet each other. The experience proved to be an eye-opener for all students. “I think it was a great opportunity to meet new friends and talk to people I don’t usually have the chance to speak to,” Dream Huang says.
