LSA’s Industrial Visit To GS1 Malaysia Berhad

The Logistics Student Association (LSA) organised an industrial visit to GS1 Malaysia Berhad located in Bandar Sri Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. Goh, the CEO of GS1 Malaysia warmly welcomed all students by giving the opening speech and Leong continued with a sharing session about the activities at GS1.

The event started with a brief introduction of GS1 describing its history, mission and vision. The sharing session continued with the discussion of the fundamentals of GS1 and its relevancy in the logistics industry especially when movement of goods is concerned

The session highlighted the technology being used for goods tracking which is critical in the logistics industry. This is crucial because for every good sent, the ETA must be recorded. From the information shared, GS1 has shown and set a good standard  of control on every item moved either locally or internationally.

This includes setting  standards to identify, and automatically capture barcoded data and also a standard to share data  electronically between trading partners. Some of the barcodes highlighted the different nature of goods being moved such as EAN-13, UPC-A, ITF-14 and GS1-128.

Other than that, Leong also shared on the relevancy of GS1 and Unique Identifiers in the Supply Chain, Data Carrier under the Governance of GS1.

This event focused on the efficiency of goods tracking through bar coding by GS1 where by using the coding system, each item were traceable along  a supply chain channel (point of origin to the point of destination). Besides the theory of bar coding, the method to determine product visibility was also shared, thus providing a barcode inspection service to customers.

Essentially, GS1 connects and integrates the quality of supply chain operation in  the logistics industry. The session ended with Q and A session and a group photo session with respective representatives from GS1 Malaysia. A token of appreciation was given by Salini, on behalf of LSA to GS1.
