Nurturing young technopreneurs

KUALA LUMPUR: The Faculty of Business & Information Science (FOBIS) recently hosted the UCSI University Business Plan Competition 2013 Finals on Mar 8, 2013 on campus grounds to equip aspiring innovators with technopreneurship skills, and promote greater awareness on the importance of entrepreneurship and the commercial value of business plans on the local front.

The competition also provided an ideal learning platform for students to showcase and commercialise their business plan to a panel of prominent judges comprising experts from the industry and academia.

To qualify for the competition, the participating teams were required to submit a business plan with a one-minute ‘elevator pitch’ video and the five best teams would be able to advance to the finals.

Winners will move on to compete in the prestigious Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Malaysia – Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) Business Plan Competition (MIBPC); a national-level competition that is in line with MSC’s vision to develop a knowledge-based economy.

Team Health Voice – comprising students TiewKee Yee, Phuah Kok Seng and PhangSher Lyn – emerged as the champion of the competition, bagging cash prizes and 25 Extracurricular Activities (ECA) points for their win.

“I learned a lot from this experience, although there were some initial hiccups and we had to solve these using limited resources,” enthused Kee Yee, who is currently reading the University’s Accounting degree programme.

“This event promotes technopreneurship and encourages students to apply Information and Communications Technology (ICT) knowledge in an innovative and creative manner, and we have definitely learned much from this.”

Among those who were in attendance include UCSI University deputy vice-chancellor (Academic Affairs & Research) Prof. Emeritus Dr. Lim Koon Ong and FOBIS dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Toh Kian Kok, among other academics.

“I am proud to announce that this is our fourth consecutive year organising this event and I would like to thank FOBIS for making this possible,” said Prof. Emeritus Dr. Lim.

“Our University’s Vision is “to be an intellectually resilient praxis university” – one that is renowned for its leadership in academic pursuits and engagement with the industry and the community.”

He added: “And one of the many ways for us to achieve this is through such competitions; platforms that enable learners to hone their craft, test their skills in real-life settings, and gain valuable insight into the industry.”
