KUALA LUMPUR: The students of Sekolah Sri UCSI have raised donations amounting to RM11,011.50 for victims of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on the 25th of April, 2015. 

The earthquake killed at least 8,150 Nepalis, injured more than 17,860 and destroyed 600,000 homes. It is the worst natural disaster to hit Nepal since 1934. 

This prompted Mrs Tan See Min, the secondary school principal of Sekolah Sri UCSI to get the students involved to help the victims. 

"I know that without the world’s help, they will not be able to get back on their feet. It is important for them to know that we all care about them." 

The following week after the earthquake, Mrs Tan, shared her thoughts with the teachers who are in charge of the school’s Scout and St John Ambulance clubs. Her mission was also supported by Mrs Julia Woo, principal of the primary school division of Sekolah Sri UCSI. 

On the same day, members of both clubs had put up a special notice board to spread awareness on the Nepal earthquake to all teachers and students of the school. 

“It is amazing to know that the students really care and want to help. Many of them started asking about the latest development there even though some of them don’t really know where Nepal is,” said Eunice Wong Ze Way, president of the school’s St John Ambulance club. 

Amongst the efforts to raise funds was selling candies and badges to students and teachers of Sekolah Sri UCSI as well as the public. They managed to raise RM1,334.50 within three days. 

“The selling of candies and badges went well but the students then started giving very generously out of their daily allowance!” said Edmond Lim Ngee Jun, president of the school’s Scout club. 

Due to the encouraging response, the school decided to take things further by sending letters requesting for donation to the parents. From that, the school managed to collect an additional RM9,677.00. 

“It is all our students’ effort. I’m very proud of them and we hope that UNICEF will be able to use this money for the survivors – especially the children. They are our future leaders,” said Mrs Julia Woo. 

“We want to thank the students, teachers and parents for their support. In less than three weeks, we raised more than eleven thousand ringgit,” said Mrs Tan. 

Receiving the cheque on that day was Mr Richard Beighton, Chief, Private Sector Fundraising & Partnerships, UNICEF Malaysia. 

"We highly appreciate the help and contributions of Sekolah Sri UCSI. I'm sure the teachers and parents of the students are also very proud of their children. They have shown much kindness,” he said.
