23 FebTAN SRI ABDUL RAHMAN ARSHAD INSTALLED AS FIRST CHANCELLOR OF UCSI
KUALA LUMPUR, Thursday 23 February, 2006 - Educationist and diplomat, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Abdul Rahman Arshad is being installed as the first Chancellor of UCSI (University College Sedaya International) today
The former Director-General of Education who retired in 1991 was also earlier conferred an honorary Doctorate in Education (Hon.D.Ed.) by UCSI for his many years of contribution towards the development of education in Malaysia.
As Chancellor of UCSI, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman will draw on his many years of experience in education to spearhead UCSI into a new era that promises to bring quality education to both local and international students.
"I have a vision to see UCSI becoming a household name," he said. "We are still relatively new as a university,
but we are already in the forefront turning Malaysia into a
regional hub for quality education."Malaysia, he said, will continue to strive to be the centre of educational excellence in the region. "It is through vehicles like UCSI that we will see our nation’s aspirations being turned into reality," he added. "Someday, our cities will be packed with international students from many countries around the world, wanting to pursue their education in Malaysia."
On human resource development, the newly installed Chancellor, who is considered a living legend added: "UCSI will grow from strength to strength as we continue to devote time and effort towards excellence. We value our human capital. Uplifting the morale of the staff is important to ensure that the institution becomes a great place for learning."
At a time when Malaysia is moving into a knowledge-based economy, UCSI realizes the importance of its quality staff. "As an educationist, I am of the humble opinion that education is a very significant part of an individual’s personal development," Tan Sri said in his acceptance speech during the installation ceremony which was held at UCSI Campus in Cheras.
"As the former Director General of Education, I believe that education plays a pivotal role in nation building. It is education that charts the course of any one individual, community, and country."
Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Arshad was born in Masjid Tanah, Melaka and he began his education at the native Malay school at Masjid Tanah. He was later on selected to enter the Special Malay class at High School Melaka. This class was in English for children selected from Malay vernacular schools. It was here where he had his primary and secondary level education.
