Technical talk well-attended by aspiring engineers


In today's technology savvy society, there is great dependence on the sound judgment and integrity of professional engineer. The advancement of civilization, the conservation and preservation of natural resources and improvement on quality of life are all greatly affected by the work of engineers. As such, it is most crucial for engineers to be well-versed with the code of ethics in this field. 

In conjunction with Engineering Week, organized by the Institute of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), the Engineering Students’ Association (IEM UCSI Student Section) invited Universiti Malaya specialist consultant (Mechanical Engineering Department) Prof Ir Dr Abu Bakar B. Mahat to share his views and experiences with UCSI University’s (UCSI) engineering students in a one-hour technical talk titled, “Engineering Ethics and Routes to Professional Qualifications” on September 9, 2013. 

Prior to the talk, the event kicked off with a welcome speech by Ir Ben Lee, who then gave a brief introduction about the guest speaker, Prof Ir Dr Abu Bakar, who has vast experience in corporate management, business development and project implementation. Active in providing advisory and consultancy services, he has also represented various private and government agencies – such as MARA, SIRIM, CIDB, SMIDEC, IEM, and BEM – and is a highly respected and reputable professional in the field of mechanical engineering. During his session, Ir Prof Abu Bakar highlighted the importance of ethics for engineers and also emphasized the roles and functions of IEM as well as the benefits of joining as an IEM member. 

At the end of the session, a Q&A session was conducted and the event came to a close with a token of appreciation presentation to the speaker.
