UCSI University has formalised a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources, China, marking a significant milestone in international collaboration on marine science and ocean sustainability. Established in 1958, FIO is a leading national marine research institute under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, renowned for its strengths in oceanographic research, marine environmental geology, numerical modelling and climate-related studies.
Through this MoU, UCSI and FIO – together with partners from the Second and Third Institutes of Oceanography – will work closely on joint research, academic exchange and capacity-building initiatives spanning tropical to polar regions. The collaboration will focus on areas such as marine ecological protection and restoration, coastal and island sustainability, climate resilience and applied solutions for ocean and coastal communities in the region.
The partnership aligns with UCSI University’s growing research strengths in marine science, environmental sustainability, engineering and data-driven innovation, while reinforcing its position as one of the world’s top private universities and a regional leader in impact-driven research. It also supports broader blue economy and climate agendas by translating science into policy and real-world applications that benefit Malaysia, China and the global community.
