UCSI promotes "going green" through Nissan LEAF showcase

KUALA LUMPUR: UCSI University (UCSI) recently joined efforts with Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) to host the Nissan LEAF model - which is fully powered by electricity - showcase on campus grounds.

In line with the campaign's "eco-friendly" initiative, the exhibit aimed to raise awareness on the importance of reducing fossil-based fuel consumption, carbon emissions and other noxious gases.

The showcase also provided an excellent platform for students to get to know the Nissan LEAF - especially in terms of its technology and innovation - and how it benefits the environment through its "ZERO EMISSION" philosophy.

Several lucky students and staff were also given the opportunity to experience the power of the silent Nissan LEAF through "test-rides".

"Today's showcase successfully illustrates the importance of collaborative efforts between industry and academia," said UCSI deputy vice-chancellor (Academic Affairs and Research) Professor Emeritus Dr Lim Koon Ong.

"This partnership marks a key milestone for UCSI and ETCM, and portrays how the two parties can work together to generate higher awareness and start instilling "green mentality" among the younger generation," he added.

ETCM executive director Dato' Dr Ang Bon Beng also heaped praise on this initiative.

"We hope that the LEAF showcase at UCSI will help create greater awareness about the importance of reducing our carbon footprint through zero-emission transportation," he explained.

"We are happy to show the LEAF to the students and staff of UCSI, and also to let them experience what an electric vehicle (EV) is all about."

Among those present at the showcase were ETCM senior manager (Product Planning) Mr Dennis Wong Chee Ping, UCSI Faculty of Engineering, Technology & Built Environment dean Associate Professor Engineer Dr Jimmy Mok and UCSI Postgraduate & Research department head Dr Ammar A. M. Ali Al Talib, among others.

ETCM Nissan LEAF ambassador Hanis Azarea Bt. Mohammad Azman was also present to candidly share her experience with the all-electric Nissan LEAF and how it changed her mindset about sustainable mobility.

It is worthy to note that ETCM embarked on its EV awareness campaign since May 2012, with multiple projects under its wing such as the LEAF Ambassador programme, LEAF roadshows and EV talks.

The Nissan LEAF is the first mass-produced, 100%-electric-zero-emission vehicle and Nissan's strategy is not limited to the development of vehicles but encompasses a comprehensive approach to promote sustainable mobility.

This includes the development and sales of batteries, developing global and local partnerships, deploying charging infrastructure, studying the second-life use of lithium-ion batteries in EVs, promoting the recycling of parts used in vehicle production, and proposing new mobility concepts, to name a few.

Nissan is recognised for its sustainable mobility approach which constantly offers class-leading fuel efficiency models that are supported by advanced green technologies.
