UCSI UNIVERSITY ALUMNI VISITS MYANMAR REFUGEE CENTER

Kuala Lumpur, 8 October 2011 - The UCSI University Alumni Network organised a trip to the Myanmar Refugee Center after a Food Donation Drive held within UCSI University.

The Myanmar Refugee Center accommodates 150 Myanmar refugees and children from the ages of 3 – 17 years old and greatly depends on the contributions of the general public to get by on a daily basis.

The Alumni met the assistant head Ms Nguan Siang who shared the plight of the children and thanked the Alumni members for the contribution rendered. “We are very grateful to receive these dry food items that would help to sustain us over the next couple of months,” said Ms Nguan.

The Center has three classrooms, which the caretaker alternates between morning and afternoon to accommodate the 100 plus children who require education. The children and their family live in the surrounding shop lots and are usually accompanied by an adult to the learning centre. Teaching is confined to the classroom with no outdoor activities, as the learning centre is located within a factory area.

The UCSI University Alumni met some of the children, spoke to them and shared a theme of photo taking. The children were delighted with the food donations and took turns to thank each member and even helped to carry the items. The visit proved to be an educational one for the alumni members and touched a chord that there are many out there who are not as lucky as we are.

Community visits such as the above is part of the Alumni’s objective to reach out to the community and be an agent of change within the society at large.

The UCSI University Alumni Network wishes to thank the following who have contributed generously towards the Food Donation Drive; Peter Tan & B & P Miistry, Noorazlina Juivaidi, Mohzanudai Zahari and Alkagamai Kasi of Computech, UCSI Extension Sdn. Bhd. and UCSI Leisure & Conventions Sdn. Bhd.
