UCSI UNIVERSITY GETS ANIMATED WITH DOUBLE NEGATIVE LONDON

Kuala Lumpur, 24 March, 2011 - UCSI University students undertaking the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Hons) in 3D Animation Design recently had the opportunity to meet with Double Negative London (Double Negative), one of the world’s largest visual effects companies for films and the winner of an Oscar for their work on Inception, for a one-hour guest lecture session on ‘Animation and Visual Effects.’ The main aim of the workshop was to realise the University’s aspirations to provide students with a holistic learning environment that incorporates theoretical coursework with practical opportunities, as well as to provide a potential environment for students’ career advancements.

During the one hour workshop, representatives from the Human Resource Department of Double Negative London enthralled students with showreels of their work to date, as well as behind the scenes footage of Inception, to explain the techniques used to create the visual effects in the movie.

Recognising our students’ artistic skills and talents, Double Negative encouraged them to read up more on the various aspects and on the jobs available under visual effects, such as animators, modellers, lighters, riggers, texture artists, map painters, concept artists, compositors and many more.

“We want students to know that the industry exists and is thriving,” said Victoria Rodgers, Head of Human Resources for Double Negative London. “There are roles for all sorts of people, whether artistic or technical,” she added.

The School of Design students present were indeed excited and delighted with the overall turn out of the workshop as it did enlighten them on the various possibilities laid before them within the industry.

Acting Associate Dean, Low Ser En, also stressed on the importance of updating students with current industry standards. “Many students lack exposure. That’s why the University believes in keeping in tune with the industry and having such workshops, so as to heighten students’ sense of professionalism according to the industry’s expectations.”

“UCSI University strives to enhance students’ skills with the basic foundation as we want to train them as artists and not limit their potential,” he added.

With emphasis on passion and drive, Double Negative urged students to submit their applications and job resumes in the form of a showreel to Double Negative Singapore, or apply for a position there by filling out the on-line application form.

Double Negative opened the doors to its Singapore office in 2009 and works closely with Double Negative London on selected productions. Double Negative has been awarded several Visual Effects Society awards for films such as Inception and Sherlock Holmes, and with BAFTA and Academy Awards for Inception. Their upcoming works which will be aired worldwide in cinemas are Paul, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, as well as Captain America, just to name a few.
