UCSI UNIVERSITY HOLDS 10TH ANNUAL PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN 2011 IN KUANTAN CAMPAIGN OFFICIATED BY THE STATE HEALTH DIRECTOR OF PAHANG


Kuantan, 9th July, 2011 - UCSI University held its annual 10th Public Health Campaign last weekend for the first time in the east coast, at Berjaya Megamall, Kuantan. Organised by students of the UCSI University Pharmacy Student Association (UCSIUPSA) from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the two day event was themed “Care for Health, Prevent Obesity” to focus on preventing obesity and sustaining healthy lifestyle habits. 

Officiated by the State Health Director of Pahang, Dr Nooraini binti Baba together with UCSI University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr Robert Bong, the Campaign was open to the public, mainly to men and women aged 18 and above. This Campaign garnered a total of 1300 people in Kuantan. 

In his speech, UCSI University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr Robert Bong said, “Through education, research and public outreach, our goal is to become a public asset for not only our local community but for the nation and the world at large.” 

“As we continue to spread our campaign throughout the nation, we hope that you will take what you’ve learned today and continue to share our message with others. Together, we can take the first steps in achieving a healthier, happier and more productive nation as Malaysia continues on its upward road of development”, he added. 

The State Health Director of Pahang, Dr Nooraini binti Baba concurred by saying, “Prevention is better than cure, and the public should take the opportunity to benefit from such a campaign.” 

Presenting facts to raise awareness in an interactive way via touch screen computers and exhibition booths, the Campaign included various health screening tests such as the blood pressure test, blood glucose test, body fat test as well as appropriate patient counselling from qualified pharmacists to enable the public to assume responsibility for their own health. Healthy lifestyles such as diet modification and physical activities, non-smoking and non-alcoholic habits were also emphasized to the public for the prevention and management of diseases. 

“I hope that the public have been enlightened by the information provided and have benefitted from the various screening tests conducted,” said Organising Chairman, Hor Chun Kit. 

“Most importantly, I hope that everyone who took part in this Campaign will bring home with them the message that we are trying to convey: the importance of caring and being responsible for our own health, he added. 

The UCSIUPSA Public Health Campaign is an annual event since 2002. The 9th Annual Public Health Campaign was held at the Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall from 29 to 30 May 2010.
