Faculty/Department: UCSI Child Development Center Sdn Bhd (Cheras, Kuala Lumpur)


All school aged children may face problems from time to time related to learning; social relationships; making difficult decisions; or managing emotions such as feeling depressed, anxious, worried, or isolated. Child psychologists support students, families, educators, and members of the community understand and resolve both long-term, chronic problems and short-term issues that students may face. Child psychologist require highly skilled and ready resource in the effort to ensure that all school aged children thrive in school, at home, and in life. 

Child psychologists provide direct support and interventions to school aged children, consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals (i.e., school counselors, school social workers) to improve support strategies, work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies, and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services. 


Responsibilities

Promote Positive Behavior and Mental Health:

  • To work with one particular student group, such as school aged children with learning deficiency
  • To assessing and diagnose children's needs, abilities or behaviour using a variety of methods, including psychometric test, interviews and direct observation of behaviour
  • To working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside doctors, nurses, social workers, education professionals, health visitors, psychiatrists, pediatricians and occupational therapists
  • To devising and monitoring appropriate treatment / intervention programmes, including therapy, counselling or advice, in collaboration with colleagues
  • To developing and evaluating service provision for children, parents, CDC teacher and principal
  • To providing consultation to other professions, encouraging a psychological approach in their work
  • To provide counselling and supporting carers
  • Willingness to listen to concerns about academic, emotional or social problems from the children and stakeholders within UCSI CDC
  • To support school aged children to process their problems and plan goals and action by promote positive behaviors
  • To meet with parents / guardians and teachers to discuss learning, behavioral, familial and social problems
  • To counsel parents on topics like substance abuse and communication
  • To study and implement behavioral management techniques
  • To research and implement learning programs
  • To evaluate and advise school disciplinary practices for troubled school aged children
  • Must be well trained to use a variety of approaches / techniques / tools & equipment / methodologies to support school aged children and parents. The areas of scope as below:

    • Crisis preparedness, response, and recovery
    • Family-school-community collaboration
    • Diversity in development and learning
    • Research and program evaluation
    • Professional ethics, school law, and systems (if any / upon request by management)

Create Safe, Positive School Climates:

  • Prevent bullying and other forms of violence
  • Support social-emotional learning
  • Assess school climate and improve school connectedness
  • Implement and promote positive discipline and restorative justice
  • Implement school-wide positive behavioral supports
  • Identify at risk students and school vulnerabilities
  • Provide crisis prevention and intervention services

Strengthen Family-School Partnerships:

  • Help families understand their child's learning and mental health needs
  • Assist in navigating special education processes
  • Connect families with community service providers when necessary
  • Help effectively engage families with teachers and other school staff
  • Enhance staff understanding and responsiveness to diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Help students transition between school and community learning environments, such as residential treatment or juvenile justice programs

Improve School-Wide Assessment and Accountability Monitor individual student progress in academics and behavior:

  • Generate and interpret useful student and school outcome data
  • Collect and analyze data on risk and protective factors related to student outcomes
  • Support the principals in plan services at the district, building, classroom, and individual levels

Knowledge / Skills Required (Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors):

  • The ability to recognise your own limitations and respond to difficult situations
  • The ability to apply the knowledge of academic psychology and research to clinical problems
  • The capacity to be critical and analytical and to work in a self-motivated, independent way
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to deal with people in distress
  • The ability to collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines
  • The determination to succeed
  • A strong understanding of the profession and the role of a clinical psychologist, and an awareness of current Malaysia pre school children mental health issues
  • Excellent understanding of the principles of child development and preschool educational methods
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
  • Ability to evaluate in teaching and learning effectiveness
  • Ability to interpret procedures and data
  • Strong public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent interpersonal relations, oral and written communication skills
  • Use excellent written oral English skills when communicating with students, parents, and teachers
  • Occasionally prolonged and irregular hours
  • Familiarity with safety and sanitation guidelines for classrooms
  • Excellent communication and instructional skills
  • Ability to act as mediator between children, parents and teachers

Others:

  • Identify and attending suitable self development training
  • Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports as requested by the Top Management members
  • Perform all other duties relating to the above may be assigned to you by your immediate supervisor from time to time
