Visual Merchandising Course Final Project Exhibition by Fathmath Zaiba Ismail Rasheed [Diploma in Fashion Design]

Year 2 Semester 4 Project titled ‘CARVEQUE’ by Shamikh Hassan Jaleel [Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architecture]

This project began with research on the concept of an art gallery, the challenges faced by artists and the type of art that best suits the Banting site. Subsequently, a manifesto was developed based on this research.

The proposed building, serving as an art gallery, emphasises two key points from the manifesto. Firstly, it addresses the issue confronted by contemporary young artists, which is the challenge of consistently producing high-quality artwork and how we can embrace this reality. Secondly, it draws inspiration from the Mah Meri tribe, known in Banting for their woodcrafts, seeking to incorporate this influence into the building's design.

Therefore, in this design, solutions to these highlighted points are translated into architectural elements. The structure adopts an organic form similar to the woodcarving products crafted by the Mah Meri tribe. It encourages a sense of openness through its lofty ceilings and expansive river-facing openings in Banting. The winding walls are also intended to create a sense of mystery upon visitors' entry, enhancing their curiosity within the gallery space.
