Kuala Lumpur, 7 February 2009 - The second division of UCSI University’s 8th Annual Public Health Campaign commenced in Taiping, Perak at Sekolah Menengah St. George on this day. Organised by 2nd year students from the School of Pharmacy, the campaign garnered support from almost 200 members of the public who came to check their glucose levels and cholesterol levels, body mass index and body fat.

The opening ceremony of the Taiping division was launched by Associate Professor Dr. Yeong Siew Wei, Associate Dean of UCSI University’s School of Pharmacy, Ms. Yoong Yok Yam, Principal of SMK St. George, Taiping and representatives of co-sponsors, Metro Pharmacy and Metta-Care Pharmacy, Mr. Lee Ling Kong and Mr. Tong Kok Chan.In her speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yeong stressed the importance of hands-on learning and practical training. “It’s important that the students learn things that is outside of their textbooks and classroom, and really going to the grassroot level to learn not only about applying their technical skills, but being a caring citizen as well,” she said. She also said that the Public Health Campaign is a great avenue for the students to practice their soft skills.

Ms. Yoong Yok Yam, the school’s principal was impressed at the students’ event management skills. “It is very encouraging to see this passionate group of students, organising an event at this magnitude, as it shows a clear indication on what our future leaders in our communities will be like in the future,” she said.The event at Taiping, Perak is the second leg for UCSI University 2009 Public Health Campaign. In January, another group of Pharmacy students successfully completed the first leg in Pandamaran, Klang. The students will be collaborating with students from the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine for a bigger event in Kuala Lumpur in the middle of this year.
