On 29 December 2022, UCSI University embraced new students and their parents from all over the world on Orientation Session here at KL Campus. During Orientation, students of January 2023 Intake were given the opportunity to mingle among peers and get to know the Student Council as well as learn more about the University.
In May 2021, UCSI University and Insight Institute of Learning, Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish UCSI University’s first overseas branch campus. This is certainly a great milestone for both countries and will help the Bangladeshi community to increase their workforce demand in the global employment markets.
UCSI University and Focus Point Vision Care Group, one of the largest optical retail chain stores in Malaysia today have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in line with the effort to foster a competent workforce for the optometry industry. This collaboration is a mutually beneficial partnership which sees both parties taking strides in providing educational opportunities and industry experiences to the next generation. It will also provide interest-free student loans to undergraduates pursuing the Optometry course at UCSI as well as an opportunity to work with Focus Point for 5 years upon graduating. The MoU was signed by Professor Dr Jimmy Mok Vee Hoong, Pro Vice-Chancellor, UCSI Springhill Campus and Dato Liaw Choon Liang, President and Chief Executive Officer of Focus Point Vision Care Group Sdn Bhd at UCSI Kuala Lumpur campus.
UCSI University welcomed the visit of a delegation from the Minister of Education, Dr Justin Valentin and his delegates from the Agency for National Human Resource Development, Republic of Seychelles, on 15 December 2022. The visit encourages further cooperation between the two countries to meet the increased need for Blue Economy, Sustainability, and Innovation. The visit was hosted by UCSI’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Internationalisation, Professor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof, and academic members from KL, Springhill and Sarawak campuses as well as UCSI College. The Honourable Minister Dr Justin Valentin was impressed with UCSI’s comprehensive suite of programmes and facilities meeting the needs of their nation and looks forward to sending more Seychellois students to study at UCSI. UCSI’s Seychellois ICAD Fashion Design final year student, Ms Bertin Fabiani, and Seychelles’ Honorary Consul, Mr Kabilan Muniandy were also among the attendees.
UCSI University hosted a visit from delegates of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China on 14 December 2022. The Minister Counsellor, Mr Lin Shiguang led the visit with other delegation members, including its First Secretary, Dr Wu Xiaoping, and First Secretary, Ms Yao Yinghua. The UCSI University directors, deans and heads of various faculties and departments, and several students from China also joined the session, hoping to open up more collaboration opportunities between UCSI University and the People’s Republic of China.
In this #MeetOurFASAlumni episode, Dr Kumar Veerapen, Senior Expert, Data Science (Human Genetics) Chemical Biology and Therapeutics from Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA; shared tips on pursuing a career in science, his PhD journey and experience working as a scientist abroad. He also shared his experience as a research fellow at the Analytic and Translational Genetics Unit (ATGU) at Massachusetts General Hospital and as community engagement manager at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Dr Kumar is an alumnus of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Biotechnology programme under the Faculty of Applied Sciences, UCSI University.
Six UCSI University academics received a RM25,000 grant at the World's Top 2% Scientists award ceremony organised by the university. These six academics made the list compiled by Stanford University researchers in the United States of America.
In this Alumni Networking Session 2022, three UCSI Alumni were invited to share their experiences, the changes in their respective industries and career opportunities in a post COVID-19 pandemic era. The alumni speakers were Dr Kev Lim Shiau Chong, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of QMed Asia, Mr Ow Jia Loon, Account Manager (Team Lead) on Client Servicing at Nuffnang Sdn. Bhd., and Mr Harry Hoon Jian Wen, Engineer at T.E.M Engineering Group.
Since IPFC started in 2014, the Institute of Music continues to strive for its mission to be the leader in music education and musical culture in the region by providing a platform to cultivate performing arts through recitals, master classes and workshops. This year, IPFC is delighted to have 89 contestants from 10 countries (including Malaysia), and 7 international judges for the adjudication and performances. The final round adjudicators are Dr Julie Bees, Armen Babakhanian, Yen Chun-Chieh, Minoru Miura, Bobby Chen, Lena Ching and Professor Dr P’ng Tean Hwa.
Nation building is about developing the nation to be a harmonious, progressive, prosperous and sustainable country. It is about mitigating the risks involved and harnessing the opportunities. Over the years, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) has been providing strategic advice on science for the nation and its role in inspiring innovation is widely recognised. This talk by Professor Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail, FASc, President, Academy of Sciences Malaysia and STI Advisor to the Government deliberates on the many challenges science face in supporting the country’s nation building agenda, now and in the future. The talk would hopefully ignite fresh ideas to further strengthen the nation’s science ecosystem and progress.
