Engineering For All

UCSI’s Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering recently organised an event called “Engineering for All” for underprivileged communities including refugees from several ethnic groups aged 6 to 12.

Held at Block E of UCSI University Kuala Lumpur campus, this event was co-organised by Hands of Hope, IChemE and the IET Student Chapters to educate the underprivileged on engineering applications in their daily lives.

A workshop was conducted during the event where participants were guided to produce an electric car from recycled materials such as plastic bottles, satay and ice-cream sticks.

During the workshop, they were briefed on the working principles of the electric car. A car racing competition was conducted at the end of the workshop.

The electric car was selected because it involved the application of chemical engineering knowledge through the working principle of battery, mechanical aspects of the car body as well as circuits and motors which are all related to electrical engineering.

This event was mainly to reach out to the underprivileged and to involve them in hands-on activities to make learning more fun.

The electric car may serve as a toy or souvenir and lastly, the event could contribute in cultivating the interest of learning more about the field of Engineering and Technology.
