PSYCHOLOGY CONFERENCE: BUILDING BRIDGES

Kuala Lumpur, 12 February 2003 - The National Psychology Conference hosted by UCSI (University College Sedaya International) recently received very positive response from the public that its organiser, Sylvester Lim vows to host another such conference in the near future.

Lim, who heads the Student Affairs at UCSI and a trained psychologist himself, said: “We hope to reach out to the community with our skills and expertise. Increasingly, the public is aware the importance of psychology in their day-to-day relationships, especially at the workplace.”

This is in line with UCSI looking set to offer a degree programme in psychology. “Currently, the approval is still with the National Accreditation Board,” he said.

The conference, themed “Building Bridges: Connecting You and the World” featured among others Associate Professor Dr Lily Mastura Harun of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Dr Rusnani Abdul Kadir, George Alex Sanders, Dr Rozainee Khairudin and Associate Professor Dr Mohd Tajudin Ninggal.

Co-organiser of the event, Choong Lai Lai said she was fascinated by the topic, “Eight Stages of Man” by George Alex Sanders, who is the Associate Director of Global Motivational Training Berhad, a training consultant agency.

“It helps me to understand the different phases of life from cradle to grave, and help me realize where I am, and how to improve myself in these areas,” she said.

Another participant said the conference was a very good introduction on the subject and its daily applications in life. “I have read Psychology books, but a conference like this makes it come alive,” he said.

Most participants felt that the Malaysian public needs to have more understanding on Psychology within the Malaysian cultural context, as opposed to what is written in psychology books by western authors.
