UCSI’s social sciences and liberal arts students showcase their research projects at Research Colloquium 2015

KUALA LUMPUR: The Faculty of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts (FOSSLA) has recently held its second annual Student Research Colloquium on campus ground. A total of 55 presentations were made by the students of Mass Communication, Psychology and English Language and Communication (ELC).

The research colloquium was an opportunity for FOSSLA students to present their research and to get feedback from audience as well as the moderators. It was also a venue for students to showcase the hard work they have put in their research projects. The theme this year was ‘Representation’.

Vice Chancellor Senior Prof Dato’ Dr Khalid Yusoff who gave the Keynote address said that research is an area the university needs to work on further. Events such as the colloquium provide a platform for the students to improve their research skills and gain more knowledge.

During the opening speech, the Dean of FOSSLA, Assistant Prof Dr Chan Nee Nee said “Research is about critical thinking….by welcoming feedback, it is a path to self-improvement”.

The Colloquium ran two parallel sessions, one in the morning and the second in the afternoon. The sessions were held in various venues. Each venue consisted of 5 different research presentations. After each presentation, the audience was encouraged to ask questions and give feedback.

The colloquium created learning communities which has brought students and lecturers closer. The feedback by the audience was interesting as members from different fields contributed viewpoints that had not been thought of before.

The Colloquium ended with a presentation of Research Colloquium Awards. The Research Colloquium Awards were won by ELC students Ong Chyi Ann, and Aaron Lim Kwok Xian, and Psychology student Boshra Shirzad. The Excellent Presentation Honourable Mentions went to David Yap Yuen Tien and Dickson Yu of Psychology.
