UCSI University Students Gain Insight From Industry Players

Kuala Lumpur, 11 March 2009 - Realising the need to expose today’s youth to more varied career choices, UCSI University’s Cooperative (Co-Op) Education & Career Services department (CECS) organised a two-day career fair to ensure students understood the options available to them once they graduated. Thirty-four companies participated in the event whereby students were able to attend on-the-spot interviews conducted by the companies and participate in a series of career talks by industry players. Students were also able to attend a resume clinic with online job-matching company, Jobstreet, which gave students pointers on how to write their resumes. Seven hundred students participated in the event. The event also saw a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between UCSI University and the University’s Co-Op partners, Steven Lim & Associates and Cryocord. The MoU aims to forge a strong partnership between the University and the two companies to enable Accounting and Finance and Biotechnology students to have more experiential learning while interning with them. The University’s Career Fair comes at a time where there is a lot of uncertainty regarding graduate employment during the current turbulent economic climate. However, this initiative by the University, gave students some assurance about employment by giving them the chance to speak directly to prospective employers.Since its inception, the Co-Op programme has proven to be effective. In a recent survey, 90 percent of the students who had undergone the Co-Op programme received favourable reviews from their employers, who were interested in rehiring the students.

The Co-Op programme ensures that students are equipped with not only the right technical skills, but also with crucial soft skills which give them the competitive edge in today’s job market.
