The Malaysia Optometry Students Sports Event (MOSSE) is a yearly competition held by Malaysian Optometry Schools that serves as a platform for students to demonstrate their athletic capabilities. MOSSE 2023 was held on October 14, 2023, at SEGI University and on October 15, 2023, at UCSI University. 180 participants from three universities, UCSI, SEGI, and UKM, attended the event. Seven sports competitions were organised during the two-day event. On Day 1, tug of war, badminton, table tennis, and futsal were held at SEGI University. On Day 2, dodgeball, basketball, and volleyball competitions were conducted at UCSI University. This event facilitated a bonding session between lecturers and students from three different universities. All the participants had the opportunity to network with people in the industry. Awards were given at the end of the event to those who excelled and contributed to the event committees and MOSSE.
This student-led event involved active engagement from student leaders of the School of Optometry Student Association (SOOSA) and with the participation of all Optometry students.
The event invited Prof Dr Chen Ai Hong from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to share her valuable knowledge and assessment tips in her keynote lecture entitled “Clinical Pearls in Prescribing for Paediatric Population”. Another keynote speaker, Prof Niall Strang from Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), UK also shared a keynote lecture on “Incomitant Deviations”.
UCSI University’s School of Optometry organised a vision screening event at SJKC Desa Jaya 2 on the 14th of September 2023. The event aims to raise awareness of ocular health among primary school students and to educate students about maintaining proper visual hygiene.
A total of 36 students and lecturers from UCSI University's Optometry Department conducted vision tests for the students of SJKC Desa Jaya 2. The tests included examinations for near vision, distance vision, eye muscle alignment, and colour vision. In total, 323 teachers and Standard 3 students participated in this event.
42 senior citizens at the Tong Sim Senior Citizen Centre received free vision screening under the “One Hope Charity Vision Screening” event conducted by the School of Optometry Student Association. With the objective to increase awareness on eye health among the community, this event was made possible through the collaboration and Community Grant from the Association of Malaysian Optometrist (AMO).
Out of the 42 people screened, 40 senior citizens will be referred to the UCSI Eye Centre for further management such as refractive error assessment and complete eye examination. Those with any eye disease, such as cataract and glaucoma, will be referred to the ophthalmologist for a full comprehensive eye check. Free eyeglasses or reading glasses will also be prescribed for patients who require near vision correction.
