17 MayAMBULANCE DEMO FOR INTERNATIONAL NURSES' DAY
KUALA LUMPUR, 17 MAY 2006 - A male nursing student at University College Sedaya International (UCSI) was the "casualty" in an "accident" that took place in a public place. He was supposed to have fallen and sprained his ankle. A few minutes later, the siren from a private ambulance rushing to the scene was heard.
Immediately, the rescue team swung into action, being watched by nursing students who learnt how to handle an accident victim from emergency services provider, MaxAce Ambulance Service. The event was held in conjunction with the celebration of International Nurses’ Day in Cheras.
The theme for this year’s event, according to UCSI’s Head of School of Nursing, Professor Dr. Nafsiah Shamsudin is "Prevention is Better Than Cure".
"Besides giving the opportunity to student nurses to showcase what they have learnt, the Nurses' Day celebration also allows them to demonstrate the role of nurses in healthcare and the society," she said. "Nursing is a profession of practiced-discipline and one of the most important roles of a nurse is to promote good healthcare practices."
Also present at the event was the President and Vice Chancellor of UCSI, Peter T. S. Ng, who also officially launched the celebrations by cutting a cake in a simple ceremony.
Seven booths were set up for a mini exhibition, in conjunction with the Nurses’ Day celebrations, and to offer free tests to students and staff of UCSI as well as members of the public.
Of the seven booths, UCSI nursing students took up four booths to create awareness on diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and breast cancer. They also took conducted free tests for blood sugar, blood cholesterol and blood pressure.
MaxAce, Zen Fitness Centre and the National Organ Transplant Centre, occupied the remaining booths.
