Assistant Professor Dr Quek Shio Gai proves that developmental disorders are not impediment to success

If there is one thing that Assistant Professor Dr Quek Shio Gai has proven to us, it is that development disorders such as autism should never become a stumbling block to success. The lecturer from UCSI University’s Faculty of Business was first diagnosed with autism at a very young age, which was also around the same time where he showed interest and aptitude in mathematics.

Despite facing various challenges while growing up, Dr Quek Shio Gai has successfully paved his way towards becoming an assistant professor specialising in mathematics at UCSI University today, under the Department of Actuarial Science and Applied Statistics, which he joined since 2016. Much of his accomplishments in his field, in which he has also earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from University of Malaya in 2014 was also due to the support and encouragement he received from his parents and siblings, who saw his mathematical ability throughout his formative years.

Today, Dr Quek Shio Gai is a specialist in fuzzy mathematics – which is a branch of mathematics that is related to fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic – and works closely with Associate Professor Dr. Ganeshsree Selvachandran for his research. This year, the assistant professor and his team have won two awards at the Invention & Innovation Awards (IIA), organised during the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2020.
