Career Program (E.P.I.C.) recently organised a Mind-set talk

KUALA LUMPUR: UCSI University’s (UCSI) Equipping Peers in Career Program (E.P.I.C.) recently organised a Mind-set talk on March 27 to cultivate a positive mindset among UCSI’s engineering students to be steadfast in their studies and to enhance their personal development for their future endeavours.

Aiming to share and inspire, the talk titled “The Positive Mind-set” was conducted by guest speaker Associate Professor Ir Dr Jimmy Mok, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment.

According to Ir Jimmy, the world without engineers is boring, and in trouble.

“Laptops, smartphones, and all things we enjoy on Fridays are thanks to engineers. Without a doubt, we live co-dependently on other professions, but you would not want to see doctors everyday – as that would mean you are not well, and lawyers, the moment you see them, you know you are in trouble.”

Ir Jimmy shared his life story and how being resilient and having a positive mindset has brought him to where he is today. On top of that, Ir Jimmy engaged students on academic matters such as report-writing where he pressed on the severity of plagiarism and jested, “While the government has AES, lecturers have ‘Turn It In’.”

He urged for future engineers to know the importance of producing technical reports which are essential for engineers, should they pursue one for a career.

William Shakespeare once said, “Nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so”. This emphasises once again the importance of changing our thinking to change our life. In order to help students be more prepared for competitive real-life work environments, Ir Jimmy encouraged students to discover their power in facing obstacles and problems.

“Of course you can choose to have a negative or positive mindset. I chose to have a positive one,” he added. Aligned with a positive mindset, priorities must be set right too as students nowadays complain about not having enough time to study, yet they have time for Facebook.

Ir Jimmy also commented on the generation’s lackaidaisical attitude.

“Do not focus on the problem but acknowledge it. If you want a change, participate in the solution,” he added.

UCSI year three Mechatronic Engineering student Arivienanand was feeling a little down until he attended the talk.

“Ir Jimmy has helped boost my confidence and mood. I am thankful to him,” he said.
