CHANGING THE MIND-SET OF MALAYSIAN MEDICAL EDUCATIONISTS


KUALA LUMPUR, 18 January 2008 - Y. Bhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd. Roslani Bin Abdul Majid, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at University College Sedaya International (UCSI) has written a book entitled ‘Changing The Mind-Set’ that encapsulates his experience as the pioneering father of problem-based learning in medical education in Malaysia. The book was launched today at the UCSI Kuala Lumpur campus. 

The book chronicles how Dato’ Dr. Roslani utilised his experience as a student in the first Medical faculty in Malaysia (University of Malaya) and thereafter, as a staff in the second Malaysian Medical Faculty (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), he was able to set up the third Malaysian medical faculty in Universiti Sains Malaysia. The book also out-lines his thoughts and suggestions on the way forward for medical education in Malaysia. 

According to UCSI’s Chancellor, Tan Sri Datuk Panglima Dr. Abdul Rahman Arshad, the book which chronicles the good doctor’s relentless efforts in promoting problem-based learning in medical education in Malaysia has revolutionised the national medical education landscape.Group President and Vice Chancellor, Peter T. S. Ng also said that the book contains much wisdom and an unrivalled richness of experience that inspires all medical professionals. 

In his congratulatory message, the Director-General of the Ministry of Health, Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Haji Mohd. Ismail bin Merican said that the book will be an invaluable source of reference for the medical fraternity because it provides a model for the setting up of a medical school, while the congratulatory message from the Director General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan bin Said states that Dato’ Dr. Roslani’s sentiments with regards to medical education mirrored the national higher education policy objectives and aspirations. 

More than 50 guests attended the event. Former students and trainees Dato’ Dr. Roslani came in full force in support of the event.
