Creating Sexual Health Awareness

Feb 2013: Promoting awareness of sexual health has not always been a standard practice especially among Malaysians in general. Although it has been acknowledged as one of the vital steps to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, sexual health awareness has received insufficient attention because of the social stigma attached to it especially within Asian countries.

Realising this, The Medical Student Association (MedicSA) of UCSI University, with the support of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, held its very first Sexual Health Awareness Campaign from Feb 5 to 7, 2013.

Themed "I'm safe. Are you?", the three-day campaign focused on the importance of sexual health awareness among the millennial generation in Malaysia and aimed to educate them on sexually transmitted diseases and ways to prevent them.

"As future medical practitioners, we believe that it is our responsibility to educate and bring to the attention of our fellow young adults the importance of sexual health regardless of one's social or racial background," said the chairman of the campaign, Matthew Jansz who is a first year student of UCSI's Doctor of Medicine (M.D) programme.

"Hopefully, we would be able to spread our message far and wide with help from the supporting NGOs such as the Family and Reproductive Health Association Malaysia, Malaysian AIDS Council and the Pink Triangle Foundation," he added.

The committee has also produced an in-house booklet featuring information related to sexual health such as an overview of major sexually transmitted diseases, a step-by-step guide on the usage of sexual contraceptives as well as an exclusive interview with a person who shared his experience being in a LGBT community.

Throughout the three-day campaign, interactive activities - such as fun games and quizzes - and various talks and workshops were also organised by participating non-profit organisations. The campaign was officiated by Associate Professor Dr Ogunbanjo, representative of the School of Medicine, UCSI University, together with Mr Sylvester Lim, Vice President of the Student Affairs & Alumni Office.
