Dr Iwan Receives Best Paper Award At ICETIR 2019

It was truly an honour and a motivating moment for Assistant Professor Ir Dr Mahmud Iwan Solihin as he received the Best Paper Award at the ICETIR 2019 (International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovative Researches).

Dr Iwan’s paper was entitled “Development of Non-Destructive Mango Assessment Based on Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Machine Learning Regression”.

The key areas of sustainable development are energy, water, food and health. Therefore, this paper is one of his research outcomes attempting to deal with the engineering challenge to apply fundamental knowledge into those sustainable key areas.

The theme of ICETIR 2019 was “Sustainable Engineering and Technology for Reshaping our Community towards Industrial Revolution 4.0” which was aligned with the topic of his paper. His paper basically combines new edge technology in optical infrared spectroscopy and machine learning algorithm to develop a non-destructive assessment of mango quality in terms of its sugar content.

In nature, this project is a multidisciplinary piece of research involving artificial intelligence (AI) and food science.

Dr Iwan thanks his collaborators Assistant Professor Dr Pui Liew Phing (Food Science), Assistant Professor Dr Ang Chun Kit and Assistant Professor Dr Lim Wei Hong (Mechatronics Engineering).

He is grateful to UCSI for providing the resources and facilities support given by CERVIE with the provision of the PSIF (Pioneer Science Incentive Funds) research grant.
