"Management Information Systems (MIS) in Today's Business" Talk

Friday, 25 January 2013: Last month, the School of Information Technology - under the Faculty of Business & Information Science at UCSI University - organised a talk titled "Management Information Systems (MIS) in Today's Business", which was attended by 50 students from various programmes - such as Computing, Accounting and Finance, Business Administration, and Marketing, to name a few.

The talk provided an excellent platform for the students to enrich their learning experience as the School had invited an industry expert - namely, Mr Mohd Amifarez B. Hamidun, Head (Commercial Support & Implementation) of Maybank Berhad - as the speaker.

Industry experts like Mr Mohd add much value to such events as they provide valuable industry insight to the participants, enabling them to have better understanding of the subject matter.

During the event, Mr Mohd spoke on the relationship between managerial and IT concepts, and also highlighted the importance of MIS in businesses that continuously seek to establish competitive advantage in today's competitive marketplace.

As one with extensive experience in the banking sector, particular in MIS, Mr Mohd stressed that MIS is closely related to the processing of data into information.

He added that this information will then be communicated to various departments in an organisation for strategic planning purposes to ultimately sustain the organisation's competitive advantage over other industry players.

Overall, there was much positive feedback on the talk from the students, who were impressed with the clarity of information provided by the speaker, adding that the talk had helped to enhance their understanding of what they had learned in the classroom.

Many of them agreed that it was important for universities to provide industry-related courses and to produce graduates with industry-related know-how.

Indeed it is only through such experiences that students are able to apply their classroom theories to the workplace.

The talk ended with a 'Question and Answer' session, where students were given rare opportunities to direct questions pertaining to the topic to Mr Mohd, who rewarded active participants with freebies.
