EASTIN HOTEL RAISED RM10,000 TOWARDS FUND FOR THE DISABLED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE UCSI WHEELCHAIR MARATHON LAST YEAR
Tsunami or no tsunami, the disabled people in our country have a life to live on. Life is a challenge especially for those who have been disabled because of an accident or an illness.
They have to learn to adjust to a new lifestyle and cooking is one of the skills that they need to learn to be able to be independent.
On Feb 3, five disabled representatives from Beautiful Gate Disabled Caring Centre, Malaysia Federation of the Deaf and Perwira K9 had the opportunity to wok with Chef Chew and his team at The Eastin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
From Beautiful Gate, Madam Tey Hong Eng attempted the Teppanyaki cooking with the help of Chef Yusof, while her assistant Wong Hei Lang learnt how to prepare the Braised Shark’s Fin Soup with Crab Meat & Bamboo Pith from Chef Woo Chee Mun.
Sariah Ibrahim, who represented Malaysia Federation of the Deaf, through sign language said it was her first time learning to prepare Eastin’s Chinese New Year Prosperous Salmon Yee Sang.
Fazlan Ismail of Perwira K9 attempted to cook the Baked Tiger Prawn with Butter & Oat with the help of Chefs Annuar and Azlie. It is real fun learning to cook, said Fazlan, who was formerly working with a hawker stall, before becoming paralysed.
Master Chef of Eastin Hotel, Chew Teik Chye and his team decided to do something for the disabled community.
This was done in conjunction with a cheque presentation ceremony by Eastin Hotel’s General Manager, Eric Goldi to UCSI Vice President of Administration, Mr Daniel Quah for the amount of RM10,000 towards the OSK Trustees For A Better Tomorrow Trust Fund.
The fund was set up as part of UCSI’s fundraising efforts in conjunction with last year’s International Day of the Disabled Persons.
In a renewed effort to raise funds for the disabled community, UCSI is reviving its SMS donations again until 31 March 2005.
Announcing the re-launch of the SMS Donations at a cheque presentation at The Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur today, UCSI’s Vice President for Administration, Mr. Daniel Quah said as an institution of higher learning, UCSI has always been in the forefront to create a better environment for the underprivileged.
By simply foregoing a lunch, members of the public can send their SMS Donations to 32132, he said. All donations will go towards the charity trust fund created by UCSI in aids of Beautiful Gate, Malaysia Federation of the Deaf, Perwira K9 and Education Assistance Fund for Orphans and the Disabled Persons managed by Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur Central.
Members of the public will also stand a chance to win electrical items from Noxxa Products Sdn Bhd, which include four sets of NOXXA breadmaker, four sets of UFESA sandwich makers, four sets of porcelain sets and two sets of UFESA toasters.
Winners will be selected from the sms received by Planetunes.com, the company which powers the sms donation campaign.

UCSI Wheelchair Marathon 2004 was a very successful event held in conjunction with the celebration of International Day of the Disabled Persons. Paralympians, including former TV3 newscaster and sports commentator, Ras Adiba Mohd Radzi and Yap Choen Wah participated in the wheelchair marathon on 21 November last year. They completed a journey of 26 kilometres on wheelchair from UCSI Campus in Taman Connaught, Cheras to TV3 in Bandar Utama.
