Education is an essential component of peace. As the former UN Secretary General said: “Education is, quite simply, peace-building by another name."
Undoubtedly, education is synonymous with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that are crucial for the development of any country.
This is emphasised in Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which seeks to impart quality education and promote lifelong learning as well as SDG 16 which promotes Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, including institutions like schools and universities.
In re-addressing race and religious extremism, the structure and delivery of education is important. It is imperative that education is kept in context and is sensitive towards the peace-building mission.
In this way, we need not escape from the dark side of extremism but promote moderation which will help us get one step closer to achieving peace and harmony. If we can live together, love each other, move on with one another, we can be the change.
